Jessica’s Pet Shelter

An Angel called Jessica looks after lost pets,
And guides them to safety before the sun sets:
A Labrador pup wandering far from his house;
A sweet little hamster and a shy little mouse;
A cat and a squirrel, a pretty song bird
Too frightened to sing or utter a word.
An Angel called Jessica takes in the stray dogs;
Alpacas and rabbits, turtles and frogs.
Her barn is quite roomy – with a kennel and coop,
And everyone’s welcome to vegetable soup;
Fruit for the birds if that’s what they eat;
Seedcakes and honey, blueberries and wheat.
Then she makes her guests comfy with pillows and rugs,
And if they’re still frightened, she gives them a hug;
Sings them a lullaby, or helps them count sheep;
And because they feel safe, they’re soon fast asleep,
To wake the next day with the people they love,
And the memory of . . . someone, with wings like a dove:
An Angel perhaps, giving shelter and light,
And sweet Angel dreams that last all through the night.
